Cherai

Cherai is a small coastal town in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, south India. It is about 30 km from Ernakulam. Cherai which is a part of the greater Vypin Island came into existence as a result of the great flooding of 1341. Cherai is home to a picturesque beach - Cherai beach.It is on the northern end of Vypin Island. Cherai has played an important role in the history of modern Kerala by becoming the birth place of two prominent political personsages of modern Kerala - Mathai Manjooran and Sahodaran Ayyappan.

Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple :Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple is one of the main Hindu temple. Temple is mainatained by Vijnana Vardhini Sabha (V. V Sabha). It also known as Malyala palani. The festival in the temple is biggest festival in Eranakulam district. The festival happens every year towards the last 2 weeks of January or first 2 weeks of February. The main attractions are Elephant march(around 20-30 elephants).

Cherai Beach : The Cherai beach is located 26 kms from Cochin. The beach is located in the Cherai village of Ernakulam district. The beach has a coastline of 15 kms. As compared to other beaches of India the Cherai beach is very clean and shallow. The beach is ideal for the purpose of swimming and sunbathing. Tall coconut trees and green paddy fields surround the sandy shores of the beach. Cherai beach is known as the golden beach of Kerala and is also famous by the name of `Princess of the Queen of the Arabian Sea`. The main beach area with 400 meters long walkway has been newly added. The beach is also famous amongst the tourists for its fresh & delicious seafood.

Azheekkal Sree Varaha Temple :Azheekkal Sree Varaha Venkateswara Temple which is situated in Cherai, Ernakulam district is the first GSB Temple in Kerala. Pratishtha by the first Guru of Shri Kashi Math. He consecrated the idol on way back to Kashi after Sethusnana in Shri Rameshwaram.The exquisite temple was constructed in A.D1869. Azheekkal Sree Varaha Venkateswara Temple is the only "Sampoornakshetra" in South India. This is the only temple in India where both the deities of Sree Varaha and Sree Venkateswara are installed side by side and worshiped as single moorthy (God).

Nearest attractions :

Portuguese Fort : Built in1503 by the Portuguese also known as 'Aya Kotta'. It is the oldest European monument in India. It was an out post to safegaurd the famous Mussiris Port. In 1661 the Dutch captured the fort and in 1789 the fort was handover to the King of Thiruvathankoor.

Pallipuram Church : The church is built by the Portuguese in 1577. The exquisite picture of Ave Mary on the top of "Altar" is brought from Portugal.
